THE OFFLINE GIF. PLAYER

Who doesn't love gif. animations? I just have a thing for it. It can make a picture come alive or it repeats your favorite moment of a movie. Pieterjan Grandry created 'The gif player' for the animated gif exhibition. It's a refreshed version of the phenakistiscope.
Before Internet or even computers where invented, Jozeph Plateau invented the phenakistiscope. The first device that was able to show moving images. During the breakthrough of the digital era, the gif animation was the first online movie. You can say it was an online version of the phenakistiscope. Grandry combined the old phenakistiscope with new digital visuals.

Translating online things in offline things. Similar concepts seems to pop-up more often these last few years. Concepts that makes us aware of the offline world that still exist next to the online world. We are living in a digital era. With the fast grew of technology amazing things are made possible. But people are also increasingly dependent on technology, becoming more dependent on materials. Can a kid that's growing up in a digital world still amuse himself without all that digital stuff?

DESK UNPLUGGED

Today, you can find us most of our time behind our desk. As digital nomads we are spending hours behind our computer because everything has to be done digitally nowadays. A source where we spill a lot of energy with!

----------------------------------------
"But what if we can use the everyday tasks we perform at this location to generate enough energy to power the electronics we normally have on our desk."
 ----------------------------------------

a question that the Swedish student Eddi Törnberg asked himself. Törenberg started a project called 'unplugged' for the future office. The office where the time we spend behind our desk helps to generate the energy we need to feed our electronics with. That by the pressure on the carpet, the body heat on the chair, plants that produce sugars and natural acids and the heat that got produced by the electronics on the desk.

'Unplugged' is still in progress, so this is a sample of the prototype. I think this technical developments in material could make a big change. Finding ways to produce energy with everyday tasks. A lot of people wants to live greener as long if it takes no extra effort. As people in a wealthy society we once 'act' lazy, because we're used that everything is simplified. We want to do more things, in less time.

Imagine what this could mean in the future. Energy that got produced by the carpets in shopping malls, where hundreds of people walk on every day. Or energy that got produced by body heat in metros, trains and buses. Helping the earth without even knowing it!
